Chris lights way despite bulb ban
Tuesday, 08 September 2009
A SEATON and Ottery St Mary hardware store has been stocking up on 100watt light bulbs following the government ban on them being manufactured or imported in the UK.
As of last Tuesday, September 1st, the ban has been imposed by the government as a part of their plan to phase out non energy efficient bulbs.
Chris Abbott, of Abbott’s DIY, who has shops in Harepath Road, Seaton, and Jesu Street, Ottery, was featured on Sky News Sunday recently, and he gave his views about the subject.
Speaking on the news programme Mr Abbott said: “The majority of people who come into our Seaton and Ottery St Mary stores are very unhappy about losing the traditional light bulb, mainly due to the poor quality of light that the energy efficient bulbs give.
“Everyone wants to be more environmentally friendly, but in some cases the low enery bulbs are just not suitable and until there is a viable alternative the opinion I am getting is that they should not yet be banned, until such time that there is a better quality alternative.”
Professor Heinz Wolff, founder of the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering, was also on the show and he added that a better quality of low energy light bulb using LED technology was in the pipeline — but these are still several years from hitting the shop floor.
Mr Abbott added that the ban had led to customers stocking up and panic buying the 100watt lights.
He said: “In both our stores we have seen unprecedented buying of all traditional types of light bulbs, and speaking to other hardware retailers across the region they are all experiencing the same.
“But as the ban is only on import and manufacture, retailers are still allowed to sell them, so we have filled our storeroom up to bursting point so that we can continue to supply our customers for at least the next few years.”

We only use low energy light bulbs but people should be able to choose.
